- Tellus AI (34), an artificial intelligence solution dedicated to detecting climate risks (CCI Occitanie Special Prize);
- Medinbox (31), an intelligent video collaboration solution for laboratories and operating rooms (Grand Prize of the Occitanie Region).
“These awards are indicative of the economic dynamism of our region, which is an innovation hub,” says Jean-François Rezeau, president of the Occitanie Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The Abbott EnSite™ X EP system is a cardiac mapping platform designed to help physicians better treat cardiac arrhythmias. The system creates highly detailed three-dimensional maps of the heart to help physicians identify and then treat areas of the heart where abnormal rhythms originate. Electrophysiology (EP) labs contain the high-tech equipment used to monitor and map the electrical systems of the heart as well as treat heart rhythm problems (arrhythmias).
With the integration of the Medinbox smart video collaboration solution with Abbott’s EnSite™ Connect Remote Support, EPs will have access to a higher level of service and more support available during ablation cases, with real-time, remote audio and video capabilities. The Medinbox system, developed in collaboration with cardiovascular experts at Clinique Pasteur (Toulouse, France), is an integrated audiovisual solution that enables procedural remote support, technical support, and live education based on de-identified images and data. Medinbox is the all-in-one solution for EP labs to record and share live case streams – giving physicians full autonomy for recording and sharing their procedures. This solution can also provide them with peer support for complex procedures and additional expertise.

310 million major surgeries are performed each year, with an estimated 50% requiring industry support and 25% requiring peer support. Having an industry representative or clinical support in the room generates significant costs and loss of time and efficiency for the medical staff and major inconvenience for patients, including possible rescheduling of a procedure and adversely affecting the quality of their care and patient satisfaction.
This collaboration between Abbott and Medinbox will leverage both companies’ respective technologies to meet the growing needs of the cardiovascular medical community by accelerating the connection between electrophysiology labs across the globe and improving the efficiency of medical teams in the lab and operating rooms. The partnership aims at facilitating the deployment of the largest medical ecosystem for remote electrophysiology support and medical education. Abbott and Medinbox have also signed a global distribution agreement covering the electrophysiology market. The financial terms are not disclosed.
Through this partnership, Medinbox is significantly scaling up its operations. The first installations of the new system are in progress and should accelerate in the coming months.
Medinbox will continue to invest in R&D and product development, preparing for new advanced technologies to help medical teams improve their professional experience. This includes Virtual Reality (VR) applications, for example to perform TAVI procedures. Thanks to a VR headset, the medical team can be in a procedure virtually, with a clear view of the physician’s technical gestures, opening up new opportunities for training and interactive experience. Medinbox also leverages Artificial Intelligence (AI) to provide hospitals and industrial partners with insights and data to review practice and improve procedures.

In the Ordensklinikum Linz Elisabethinnen, future doctors are trained live from the operating room despite the pandemic.
A digital streaming platform has been permanently installed there for the first time in Austria. This means that experienced cardiologists around the world can attend procedures as they normally would.
Because of the covid-19 pandemic, contacts are limited for future doctors’ training. At Ordensklinikum Linz Elisabethinen in Austria, medical education was maintained live from the operating rooms. The first digital transmission system has been permanently installed in Austria, meaning that heart experts from all over the world can now join the procedures as if they were physically attending.
Being able to attend an operating procedure is the basement of a solid education and training in the medical field. Procedures that take place at the cardiac catheter laboratory are now available all over the world on a digital platform, allowing experts to watch and work in real time.
Helmut Pürerfellner, Cardiologist, Ordensklinikum Linz Elisabethinen:“This is the future which we started right now, I think this is the kind of technique which we will need in the next years, not only in times of a pandemic.”
In the heart rhythm laboratory are cameras and monitors that can be remotely controlled. All the data gathered can be manipulated individually; and thanks to a control room you can access the information worldwide, simply using the internet.
“There are different scenarios, for example I can be consulting, watching a procedure and giving tips to a foreign colleague, or they can be watching us, seeing how we do a procedure, maybe for the first time, and helping us because they are virtually with us.”
“There is also a zoom feature that allows to take a closer look, exactly at the right moment with the camera” says Helmut Pürerfellner, Cardiologist at the Ordensklinikum Linz Elisabethinen.
With a perfect transmission of every single detail, the Medinbox system gives doctors a real viewing and an insight as if they were standing in the operating room themselves – with a strict compliance of data protection.
“This works in real time, without noticeable latency. It is unbelievable the quality in which it is transmitted! How sharp the signals are which are normally just screens being taped, and this would not look so good. But now we have very clear and sharp images.” Adds Helmut Pürerfellner, Cardiologist, Ordensklinikum Linz Elisabethinen:“
The experienced professionals can thus train their younger colleagues, and in this case, in interventional treatment of cardiac arrythmias, allowing attendees to follow and participate interactively in the procedures. There are also significant advantages for the patients.
“The patients benefit from being in a center where the medical staff is up to date. Because such a system makes our rhythmology center a reference in Austria, to promote and make new developments”.
Networking with other centers who possess digital platforms has become a prerequisite and can significantly enrich the exchange of knowledge in the medical field.

Medinbox, a company that has established itself all over the world has boosted its business “thanks to” covid-19.
Based in Toulouse, the Medinbox MedTech startup, specialized in remote technical assistance in operating theaters, has a booming business with the pandemic.
They are a part of the “lucky winners” in the Covid-19 crisis. This is said without any provocation or faintness. The startup that specialized in remote technical and medical assistance in operating theaters has been one of the solutions for medical doctors and healthcare professionals who were engaged on the front lines, as it has been for the hospitals and clinics who wished to modernize their facilities. Medinbox also helps reinforce remote proctoring, one of the major lessons to be learned out of this global crisis.
One software and one network
Medinbox, based in Toulouse, is the meeting point between the Clinic Pasteur and the production company Next Media Factory, which was already dedicated to the medical field. “Back then, the equation was the same: to literally limit our footprint in the OR as well as the number of technicians” recalls Nicolas Gausserand, co-founder of Medinbox. “This solution is a packaged tool that does not require much space and allows anyone to remotely control the whole system. We gather the pros of both a videoconference software and a professional social network; and the autonomous interface allows the medical staff to fully control the livestream from the OR and broadcast it somewhere else, whether it is still inside the same establishment or thousands of miles away” says the entrepreneur.
A booming business in the United States and a booming business in the Middle East
The Toulouse-based startup has equipped over a hundred and fifty operating theaters worldwide, from the USA to Australia, passing through Middle East, Saudi Arabia, Canada or Pakistan.
Primarily used in Cardiology
One of the last instances where the Medinbox system was used was in June 2021, when Canadian proctors assisted French surgeons during a procedure that took place both in Toulouse and in Rennes. “The solution is used mainly in cardiology, because cath-labs require a lot of imaging. It can be useful to train young doctors as it can be helpful for procedures, from appendicitis to much more complex surgeries such as triple bypass surgery” adds Nicolas Gausserand.
“We guarantee full data confidentiality”
The Covid-19 crisis has fast-forwarded the need for the medical industry to mutate towards telemedicine and remote assistance. “Medical doctors were not able to travel for heavy procedures. The crisis allowed the spreading of our system, with hospitals gaining interest.” And what about data confidentiality? “They are fully anonymized, and you never see the face of the patient in the OR. Before the procedure, we ask for their consent, and the patient fills a form to acknowledge his approval.”
A turnover that doubled in 2020
In 2020, Medinbox has more than doubled its turnover (3.8 million euros, including one in the USA) and tripled its sales -of which cost varies from 15,000€ to 50,000€- compared to 2019. And for the year 2021, the MedTech startup aims at a hundred sales… which would be three times higher than those of 2020! Medinbox is also counting on more flexibility by setting up a rental package of the Medinbox system through a subscription.
Hiring now
The startup is moving from Port Saint-Sauveur to an open-space office in downtown Toulouse and will be hiring five or six new people to strengthen both support and development. Medinbox is now employing about fifteen people in Toulouse, and four in the United States.
As for the future, Nicolas Gausserand sees a new emerging tendency: a patient that goes back home with a USB key containing the footage of the procedure he underwent. “We are seeing this happen more and more abroad, but also in France, when the patient has given consent. We are in a world where people want to know what is going on. And it is a security for both the patient and the hospital staff, in case of a complication or controversy regarding the procedure. Everything has been recorded”, adds the co-founder of Medinbox.
That is one lead amongst others for Medinbox, in a context where the consequences of the covid-19 pandemic are still underlying.
